I chose this Ted Talk because it gives us an insight on what Holden Caufield, from Catcher In the Rye, might be thinking. He is very insecure about his looks and the reader should know that from how he wears his red hunting hat. It is his "killing" hat and he wears it to cover his grey hairs. one side of his head is filled with grey hairs. the video shows us how his insecurity about his looks could be his biggest problem. It could be the root cause of mostly everything that is wrong with his life. she said if you have a insecurity about your looks then it can lower your GPA, or you will do worse on a assignment than a person who is not worried about their looks. She said, "Low body confidence is undermining academic achievement". With all of these images on goals of a six-pack body and ripped biceps it is hard for a teenager to think he looks good, knowing he does not look like that. If you do not have confidence in your looks you will not have confidence anywhere else. She talks about how few people do not raise their hand in class or even come to school because they do not want attention being brought to them. Holden might not participate in classes or apply himself because he is afraid of what will happen if he does. He might be scared too much attention will be shown his way. She also explains the effects of having low self-esteem, such as: depression, taking less part in physical activities, and showing bad eating habits. Holden suffers from all of these as he acts very depressed throughout the entire book and that is probably his main problem. The only activity he takes part in is being a lacrosse manager and he does not even play the sport. He also has bad eating habits which vary, sometimes he can be hungry enough to eat an entire Entree but other times he feels as if he is not hungry enough to finish a doughnut. Ramsey says, "...we think it's for all of these reasons that they take more risks, with things like alcohol and drug use". This observation is very important because Holden enjoys doing both alcohol and drugs. He smokes way more than he drinks and he might do this so he can look cool because he thinks his looks make him look lame. He only talks to girl while he is under the influence of tobacco or alcohol. He only talks to girls then because he feels as if they will respect him more or see him doing drugs and think that he is cool. He does drugs and alcohol because they give him confidence and he needs that extra boost these things provide him with. Ramsey also talks on how to deliver body confidence and to do that you need to fix relationships with family and friends. Holden does not have a great relationship with either friends or family. He needs to address these relationships and figure out a way to improve them. By doing this he will be a much happier person and have much more confidence. She also says to improve body confidence the individual needs a role model so they can be a role model to someone else. Holden looks up to nobody, not his dad, brother, or mother. he needs to follow in somebody's footsteps who is on a right path so that he can be a role model for Phoebe or maybe someone else. By having a role model he can learn from their mistakes and accomplishments so he can be on a better track to happiness. I though this Ted Talk was an amazing example of how Holden feels on the inside and his true emotions he hides from everybody else. It showed us plenty of reasons on why he acts the way he acts. It also gives us plenty of solutions on how to help Holden with his problems.
